Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,--Hebrews 12:1

A surprisingly pleasant summer long run

Summer running in Arkansas isn't always pleasant. When the humidity's approaching 100% and the low temps at night don't fall below 700 very often, the weather serves to sap your strength and endurance. I usually make it through my daily 6 mile runs without completely depleting myself, but longer runs will do me in almost every single time in the Arkansas summer.

So Saturday was a pleasant surprise! I knew when I did my 6 mile run on Friday that a long run was in order the next morning. That's because on Friday, the humidity was down and the temperature was in the mid 60s when I began. The entire run felt great so I started planning Saturday's 13 mile run.
"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." ~ James 1:17

For the month of June, Saturday's weather was most certainly a good and perfect gift to us runners, and I am extremely grateful to God for it. Though running in the heat and humidity certainly has its benefits (namely that when fall comes running twice as many miles seems easy comparatively), pleasant conditions and feeling good on a run is a nice break from the normal summer running experience.

We didn't push ourselves too hard and finished the 13 miles in 2 hours and 22 minutes. While that time might disappoint me if I was racing a half marathon, I was pleased with the effort in June, when I rarely run more than 10 miles on a long run day. That time included walk breaks, water stops, and bathroom breaks as well. So, for a June long run in Arkansas, this was a great day!

Thank you Jesus for Saturday's good and perfect gift of beautiful weather, a great run, and the great folks who accompanied me on the road!
